Writers Wanted for 2011 Saint Paul Almanac

Submission deadline: March 31, 2010

Now planning its fifth annual edition, the Saint Paul Almanac is the only guidebook dedicated solely to Minnesota’s capital city. Including a calendar, date book, restaurant reviews, essays and poems about Saint Paul, the Almanac is a rich resource for anyone wishing to explore the cultural and social depths of Saint Paul throughout the year. Contributors include notable Saint Paulites such as Garrison Keillor, Gordon Parks, Patricia Hampl, Carol Connolly, Jim Moore, Deborah Keenan, Mahmoud El-Kati, Phebe Hanson, and dozens more.

Saint Paul AlmanacThe Saint Paul Almanac solicits and revels in the work of authors and poets, including Saint Paul’s most prominent writers. There are contributions from baseball fanatics, hot rodders, history scholars, quirky Rangers, and newcomers from as far afield as Cambodia, Somalia, Mexico and Ethiopia.

The Almanac offers something for everything—a range of short stories, essays, mild political screeds, immigration tales, memoirs, poetry and a calendar of events.  The writers’ contributions charm and win the trust of readers through attentiveness to the tales they tell. Most of the Almanac’s editorial selections are excursions into neighborhood, family, or personal history, whose enjoyment lies in their modesty and detail. You can almost hear a child nudging each writer forward: “And then what happened?!”

The Almanac encourages writers to make their story personal and specific, have fun with the process, and think outside the box in terms of topics and format. Most selections in the Almanac are 650 words or fewer, with a small number being as long as 1,500 words. Tiny poems are encouraged. Small stipends will be paid on acceptance for publication.

Writers interested in having their work considered for the 2011 Saint Paul Almanac have until March 31, 2010 to submit. Multiple submissions are acceptable. The complete guidelines for submitting a piece and ideas for topics are available at www.saintpaulalmanac.com on the submissions page. Send your stories by email to stories@saintpaulalmanac.com.
