The Temps by Andrew DeYoung
\nThis event is FREE and open to the public.
\n*Andrew DeYoung will join the event to talk about his book*
\nJacob Elliot doesn’t want a temporary job in the mailroom at Delphi Enterprises\, but after two post-college years of unpa id internships and living in his parents’ basement\, he needs the work. Th en\, on his first day\, the unthinkable happens: toxic gas descends on a m eeting in Delphi’s outdoor amphitheater\, killing all the regular employee s and leaving Jacob and the other temps stranded inside the vast office co mplex. In the wreckage of the company that employed them\, the temps band together to create a miniature world that’s part spring break\, part offic e culture—until a shocking discovery drives them to uncover the truth abou t the mysterious corporation that employed them and the apocalypse that br ought their world to an end.
\nWith The Friends of t he Saint Paul Public Library\, moderator Jeff Kamin brings his unique take on a public book club show to Saint Paul. The Nineties by Chuck Klost erman
\nThis event is FREE and o pen to the public.
\nIt was long ago\, but not as lon g as it seems: The Berlin Wall fell and the Twin Towers collapsed. In betw een\, one presidential election was allegedly decided by Ross Perot while another was plausibly decided by Ralph Nader. In the beginning\, almost ev ery name and address was listed in a phone book\, and everyone answered th eir landlines because you didn’t know who it was. By the end\, exposing so meone’s address was an act of emotional violence\, and nobody picked up th eir new cell phone if they didn’t know who it was. The 90s brought about a revolution in the human condition we’re still groping to understand. Happ ily\, Chuck Klosterman is more than up to the job. A wise and funny reckon ing with the decade that gave us slacker/grunge irony about the sin of try ing too hard\, during the greatest shift in human consciousness of any dec ade in American history.

\nIn this coll ection\, Indigenous writers and writers of color bear witness to one of th e most unsettling years in the history of the United States. Essays and po ems vividly reflect and comment on the traumas we endured in 2020\, beginn ing with the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis\, deepened by the bla tant murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers and the uprisin gs that immersed the city into the epicenter of passionate\, worldwide dem ands for justice. In inspired and incisive writing these contributors spea k unvarnished truths not only to the original and pernicious racism thread ed through the American experience but also to the deeply personal\, in es says about family\, loss\, food culture\, economic security\, and mental h ealth. Their call and response is united here to rise and be heard.
\nWe Are Meant to Rise lifts up the astonishing variety of BIPOC writers in Minnesota a
nd meets the events of the day\, the year\, the centuries before\, again a

e human voice.

But Karina also can’t shake her fascination with Preston Utley\, a senior and anti-capitalist Internet provocateur\, who is publicly feuding with vi siting professor Robert Berger. Travel is not merely a means to bring us from one location to another. The road also makes demands on us: asking us to be willing to explore the incomprehensible parts of the landscapes we inhabit and pass through – as well as to\, ultimately\, let them blur a s they go by. This\, Glancy says\, is home.
\nGlancy teases out the lessons of the road that are never easy to define\, grappling with her own : childhood’s puzzle pieces of her Cherokee heritage and a fraught but sti ll compelling vision of Christianity. As she clocks an inordinate amount o f driving\, as she experiments with literary forms\, she looks to what the land has held for centuries\, before the roads were ever there.

About the Book
\nThe police murders of two Bla ck men\, Philando Castile and George Floyd\, frame this searing exploratio n of the historical and fictional narratives that white America tells itse lf to justify and maintain white supremacy. From the country’s founding th rough the summer of Black Lives Matter in 2020\, David Mura unmasks how wh ite stories about race attempt to erase the brutality of the past and unde rpin systemic racism in the present.
\nIntertwining history\, litera ture\, ethics\, and the deeply personal\, Mura looks back to foundational narratives of white supremacy to show how white identity is based on share d belief in the pernicious myths\, false histories\, and racially segregat ed fictions that allow whites to deny their culpability in past atrocities and current inequities.

\nIn the 1920s\, the richest people per capita in the world were members
of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath
their land\, they rode in chauffeured automobiles\, built mansions\, and s
ent their children to study in Europe. Then\, one by one\, the Osage began
to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman\, Mollie Burkhart\, became
a prime target. And it was just the beginning\, as more and more members
of the tribe began to die under mysterious circumstances.
Based on
years of research\, each step in the investigation reveals a series of si
nister secrets and reversals. It is a searing indictment of the callousnes
s and prejudice toward American Indians that allowed the murderers to oper
ate with impunity for so long.
