Each day leading up to the 32nd annual Minnesota Book Awards announcement, weโll be featuring an exclusive interview with one of our 36 finalists.
Interview with Bao Phi, author of My Footprints, part of the Children’s Literature category, sponsored by Books for Africa
How does it feel to be a Minnesota Book Award finalist?
I’m grateful to be in such wonderful company.
Tell us something about your finalist book that you want readers to know.
Bullying is something I had to endure as a young child. I am hoping my book can add to the discussion, and get kids talking. Especially but not limited to Asian American kids.
Share something about your writing process and preferences. For instance, where is your favorite place to write?
I pretty much only write at home, or if I have the rare opportunity to be on a retreat.
Minnesota has a reputation a place that values literature and reading. In your experience, what is it about our state that makes it such a welcoming, conducive place for writers and book creators?
There is a tremendous amount of talent with very little ego. There’s a sense of community here, or at least, a strong desire for it. There’s also financial support for writers here that rivals or exceeds most American major cities.
What is something you are good at that few people know about?
Procrastinating.
What do you love about libraries?
Pretty much everything.
Bao Phi is also the author of A Different Pond, a Caldecott Honor Book and Minnesota Book Award-winner, and two collections of poetry.
